Mukuro had the misfortune to be born into the Estraneo family in that family's darkest hour. At first when he was growing up, there appeared to be nothing wrong with the way the family functioned, but that was because Mukuro had not reached an age that was easy to experiment on with a high success rate of survival.

When that time came Mukuro was then given up by his parents to the Estraneo scientists and put into the research program. He was poked with needles, his head cut open, and all sorts of chemicals put into his body to cause nasty reactions in the name of defense for the family. He was told every day, "This is the fault of the other families, especially the Vongola family. They have forsaken us." Hearing that each time the pain wracked his tiny body, Mukuro grew up from the gentle half vampire he could have been into a very sinister individual. But, still he was not able to fight back.

Finally when he reached the age of eleven or so, he was able to fight back after one particularly nasty experiment that Estraneo scientists thought he would not survive. The boy that had blue eyes that appeared so gentle, now had one blue eye, but also a red eye with the kanji for six in it. Seen as a success Mukuro was then informed he would be used as a weapon of revenge, and yes, he agreed to it but he then did something very tactical from an eleven year olds point of view. He allowed himself to be trained on how to fight with his new illusionary magic, before turning on the scientists and the Estraneo family itself and killing everyone with the ability that he was given to help it.

He carried no remorse and left alive a few children of the Estraneo family to do as they wished, but he had bigger plans and disappeared into the night. His whereabouts were unknown until just recently, and he is out for revenge on the other families for the pain and suffering they caused regaurdless of if they were the ones to give orders.
